American Song Contest: Set to hit the screen in 2022 on NBC

  • The Eurovision Song Contest is heading to the other side of the Altantic, as in 2022 the American Song Contest will hit the screen on NBC. 

    The Eurovision Song Contest is crossing the Atlantic and will eventually start writing its own history in the United States with the American Song Contest which will hit the screen in 2022 on NBC. NBC has secured the rights for the 'American Song Contest' - a co-production between Propagate and Universal Television Alternative Studio, a division of Universal Studio Group.

    The show will include live performances, representing all 50 states, 5 United States territories and the nation’s capital, Washington, D.C, competing to win the country's vote for the ‘Best Original Song’.  Each representative can be either a solo artist, a duo, a DJ or a band will represent each competing terittory performing an original song, showcasing the different styles and genres of music across America.

     

    The procedure for the local state selections and submission is already taking its way with all kind of genres of music eligble to take part in the stateside live contest. 

     

    Martin Österdahl, Executive Supervisor of the Eurovision Song Contest, shares his excited on the new show saying:

    ‘For 65 years the Eurovision Song Contest has connected people far and wide. As owners of this hugely successful format, we have seen how it has found a place in millions of hearts across Europe and beyond.Now we are excited to have found the perfect partners to share this unique competition and its passionate celebration of music and original songs with the American people.'

     

    The live Contest will include  three rounds, with the competing acts taking part in a series of Qualifying Rounds, followed by Semi-Finals and the ultimate Grand Final in which the final winner will be determined.

     

    Anders Lenhoff, Peter Settman, Christer Björkman and Ola Melzig, producers with an Eurovision Song Contest experience of over 20, obtained the American format rights for Eurovision Song Contest from the EBU and teamed up with Propagate to bring Eurovision to the states.

    The Eurovision team says about it: 

    ‘The Eurovision Song Contest is the biggest live music event in the world, and it is a great honour to bring it to the United States and transform our dream of American Song Contest into a reality on NBC. It’s awe-inspiring to stand at the beginning of an American legacy and it doesn’t get more exciting than that.’
