Tonight: Watch for the first time the Eurovision 2006 High Definition cut

-
An unreleased high definition cut of the 2006 Eurovision Song Contest in Athens, will be broadcast tonight for the first time on the official Eurovision Youtube Channel at 21:00 CEST.
For the first time the Eurovision fans will have the chance to watch tonight on the offical ESC Youtube Channel, 15 years after the event, the never-before-seen HD footage from Eurovision 2006 at the Athens Olympic Indoor Hall.
The tapes with the HD material from the 51st edition of the contest had been stored in the Greek national broadcaster's headquaters and were discovered just recently by ERT's staff. After been digitised in the Netherlands the EBU is sharing tonight the HD footage. This high definition footage was filmed as part of a research experiment carried out by the European Broadcasting Union, ERT, the Institute for Broadcasting Technology in Munich and the research and development laboratories of Rai and the BBC. It was never intended to be broadcast.
The HD cut to go public this evening will not include the on-screen graphic overlays and postcards and in several parts the picture will switch from HD back to SD as not all cameras in Athens that time had the capacity of HD recording. However it will be really interesting to see unreleased footage from a contest 15 years back in HD, which the same time will showcase how new technology has been introduced in the competition over the years, progressing the contest in a higher level.

Eurovision 2006
The Eurovision Song Contest 2006 was the 51st edition of the Eurovision Song Contest. It took place in Athens, Greece, following the country's victory at the 2005 contest with the song "My Number One" by Helena Paparizou. It was the first time Greece had hosted the contest - 32 years after the country made its debut. The slogan of 2006 was "Feel the Rhythm" while the 2006 sub-logo created by the design company Karamela for Greek television was based on the Phaistos Disc which is a popular symbol of ancient Greece.
Organised by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and host broadcaster Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation (ERT), the contest was held at the Nikos Galis Olympic Indoor Hall, and consisted of a semi-final on 18 May, and the final on 20 May 2006. The two live shows were presented by Maria Menounos and Sakis Rouvas.
Thirty-seven countries participated in the contest. Armenia took part for the first time this year. The winner was Finland with the song "Hard Rock Hallelujah", performed by Lordi and written by lead singer Mr. Lordi a.k.a. Tomi Petteri Putaansuu. This was Finland's first victory in the contest - and first top five placing - in 45 years of participation.
It was the first ever hard rock / heavy metal music song to win the contest, and Lordi was the first band to win since 1997. Russia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Romania and Sweden rounded out the top five. Bosnia and Herzegovina achieved their best result in their Eurovision history. Further down the table, Lithuania also achieved their best result to date, finishing sixth. Of the "Big Four" countries Germany placed the highest, finishing joint fourteenth (with Norway).
