Ukraine: Vidbir 2024 finalists determined

  • The Ukrainian national broadcaster, Suspilne, has unveiled the 10 artists that will be taking part in the Vidbir 2024 national final. 

    A total of 389 songs were sent to Suspilne, by 288 artists, 222 of whom are solo singers. After the first phase of reviewing Suspilne released a longlist of 20 acts passed to the next stage of the selection. 

    Now the broadcaster has came down to the 10 finalists that will compete in the national final for Eurovision 2024. An extra eleventh act will be selected by an online public vote from those on the long list that didn't advance so far to the final. 

    Namely the 10 acts that will compete in the televised national final are:

    • Alyona alyona & Jerry Heil – “Teresa & Maria”
    • Drevo – “Endless chain”
    • INGRET – “Keeper”
    • MÉLOVIN – “DREAMER”
    • NAHABA – “GLASSS”
    • NAZVA – “Slavic English”
    • SKYLERR – “Time is running out”
    • YAGODY — “Tsunamia”
    • YAKTAK — “Lalala”
    • Ziferblat — “Place I Call Home”

     

    The additional eleventh contestant to be selected as the public's wildcard will come from the following list of candidates:

    • ANKA
    • Carpetman
    • Julia Belei
    • KARYOTYPE
    • KRYLATA
    • PARFENIUK
    • SHÉPA
    • STASYA
    • SWOIIA
    • TESLENKO

    The full list of finalists will be revealed by December 29.

     

    Oksana Skybinska, Ukrainian Head of Delegation, informs that the entries of the contestants will be released in January:

    “The songs of the ten finalists will be released, according to tradition, closer to the final of Vidbir. By the end of this year, we suggest focusing on those artists and songs that can still compete for a place in the final and are definitely worth the attention of listeners both in Ukraine and abroad. In December, voting will take place in Diya, and everyone will be able to listen to the songs of the longlist participants, and choose who will receive the eleventh spot in the final.”

    The Ukrainian national final is expected to take place in February as a televised show the results of which will be influenced by jury and public voting. The public will have also a say on which people will from the jury through a special online voting. 

     

    Ukraine in Eurovision

    Ukraine participated for the first time at the Eurovision Song Contest 2003 when Oleksandr Ponormayov represented the country Hasta la vista. Ukraine has won the Eurovision trophy three times, in 2004 with Ruslana and in 2016 (Jamala) and in 2022 (Kalush Orchestra). Following both victories the country hosted the contest in 2005 and 2017. The country has achieved remarkable results as it has reached 10 times the top 10 places in its 15 year ESC history.

    Namely, Since the introduction of the semi-final round in 2004, Ukraine is the only country outside the Big 5 to have qualified for the final of every Eurovision they have competed in. Ukraine has a total of seven top five placements, with Verka Serduchka (2007) and Ani Lorak (2008) both finishing second, Zlata Ognevich third (2013), Mika Newton fourth (2011) and Go_A fifth (2021). The only countries with more top five results in the 21st century are Sweden (11) and Russia (10).

    In 2022 Kalush Orchestra represented the nation with their song 'Stefania'Kalush Orchestra.The Ukrainian representatives brought the third trophy to Ukraine after winning the Grand final. The band accomplished to came 4th in the jury voting and by topping the televoting with the record breaking amount of 439 points won the competition with the overall score of 631 points. 

    This year TVOCRCHI defened the Ukrainian colors in Liverpool with the song 'Heart of Steel' which finished 6th in the Grand final.
