Kosovo: RTK plans to apply for EBU membership by the end of 2022
Tuesday, 17 May 2022

  • Kosovo's broadcaster, RTK, has expressed their intention to apply for EBU membership by the end of this year.

The head of RTK, Mr. Ahmetxhekaj, talking to Nacionale revealed that they have plans to submit by the end of 2022 an application for full membership in European Broadcasting Union (EBU).

Mr. Ahmetxhekaj confirmed their intention to become full member of EBU and further on take part in the Eurovision Song Contest. He stated precisely:

"It is a joint plan of the current management of RTK that in the coming period, maybe at the end of this year or next year, to officially apply for membership in the EBU."

Further on the RTK official added that current circumstances, after the suspension of Russia and Belarus, could make things easier for Kosove this time and went on saying:

"Now the chances may be greater due to the movements of the latter in terms of the exclusion of Russia and Belarus."

However, Mr Ahmetxhekaj doesn't take into account, jumping to baseless conclusions, that Kosovo is not a recognised state according to United  Nations, therefore cannot become member of  the International Telecommunication Union, which is a crucial condition for EBU membership. Kosovo can participate only if it is invited as by the EBU and the contests Steering Group. Such development took place  in Eurovision Young Dancers 2011 in Oslo, Norway, when the nation was invited to take part at this EBU event.

Back in 2019 The European Broadcasting Union saw a vote that would have been changing the membership rules, according which the members of the organization would not have to be   part of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). The secret vote was called by Cyprus, Greece, Serbia and Spain. The final results ruled out any changes as 400 members voted for the change, 673 against and a further 133 abstained.
