Finland: Robin Packalen releases his UMK 2023 song “Girls Like You”

  • Robin Packalen has released his entry for the Finnish national final, UMK 2023, titled 'Girls Like You'.

     Following the release of the seven UMK 2023 contestants, the entries of the candidates are been progressively released last week. The third out of seven competing entries for this year's UMK 2023 has been released as Robin Packalen has released his song '''Girls Like You'' for the Finnish national Final.

     

     

    ''Girls Like You'' is a classic pop song influenced by the 80's electro disco sound in english and has been penned  by Robin Packalen himself along with Joonas Parkkonen and Zoë Moss.

     

    A few words for Robin

    Born in 24 August 1998 Robin Packalen, previously known by his mononym Robin, is a Finnish singer who started as a teen pop artist. During his career, Packalen's certified albums and singles sales have amounted to over 370,000 copies, making him one of the 70 best-selling artists of all-time in Finland.

    He has participated in music competitions since 10 years old. In 2008, Packalen won the Finnish nationwide singing contest for youth, Staraskaba, when he was just 10. In 2009, he represented Finland at the New Wave Junior Contest in Moscow, which was followed by about 100 million viewers. On 16 January 2012, Packalen, described as the "Justin Bieber of Finland" by his label, released his debut single "Frontside Ollie". It received instant success, huge following online, and based on digital downloads debuted at number five on the Finnish Singles Chart before reaching the top position. 

    On 22 February 2012, his first album Koodi was released. It sold over 100,000 records in Finland, earning quintuple platinum. On 5 October 2012, Packalen released his second studio album Chillaa. The album topped the Finnish Albums Chart in its first week of release. 

    On 30 August 2013, Packalen released "Boom Kah", featuring Mikael Gabriel and Uniikki, as the lead single from his third studio album Boom Kah. The song peaked at number four on the Finnish Singles Chart. On 2 October 2013, he released the album Boom Kah, which also topped the Finnish Albums Chart. The chart topping second single, "Erilaiset", was released on 16 October 2013.

    Packalen released his fourth studio album 16 on 22 September 2014. An all-duet album, Yhdessä, was released on 9 October 2015. Packalen later went on a hiatus in 2018 to serve in the military, which is mandatory for every Finnish male citizen. 

    On 2 February, during the Emma Gaala awards ceremony, Packalen announced his comeback with a live performance of "I'll Be with You". On 11 January 2023, it was announced that Packalen will participate in Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu 2023.

     

    Song Releases

    The UMK entries will be released on the official UMK Youtube channel every weekday  from January 12 onwards. The songs will be released in the following order: 

    • January 12 – Keira
    • January 13 – Benjamin
    • January 16 – Robin Packalen
    • January 17 – Lxandra
    • January 18 – Käärijä
    • January 19 – KUUMAA
    • January 20 – Portion Boys

     

    UMK 2023

    Uuden Musikiin Kilpailu 2023 is set to take place on February 25, 2023 at the Logomo in Turku for a second consecutive year. Out of 363 entries , 7 artists have been selected to compete in next year's national final. The outcome of the final and next Eurovision hopeful will be determined by international juries (25%) and public voting (75%).

     

     

    Finland in Eurovision

    Finland has participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 53 times since its debut in 1961. Finland won the contest for the first time in 2006 with Lordi's "Hard Rock Hallelujah". The country's best result before then was achieved by Marion Rung with the song "Tom Tom Tom" in 1973, which placed sixth.

    Finland has finished last in the contest eleven times, receiving "nul points" in 1963, 1965 and 1982. Since the introduction of the semi-finals in 2004, Finland has failed to reach the final eight times. In 2014, the country had its best result in eight years when Softengine finished 11th. In 2015, Finland finished last in the first semi-final with the shortest-ever Eurovision entry, "Aina mun pitää" performed by Pertti Kurikan Nimipäivät.

    In 2020 Aksel won the national final with the song “Looking Back”.  As the competition was cancelled due to the covid-19 pandemic he never reached the Eurovision stage in Rotterdam. Last year the rock band Blind Channel triumphed in UMK 2021 with their song 'Dark Side' and went off defending the Finnish colors in Rotterdam, where they achieved the country's second best result finishing 6th with 301 points in the overall score. 

    Last year The Rasmus won the UMK national final and went on represeting the nation with their song "Jezebel" which after advancing to the final finished 21st with 38 points in the overall score.
