Eurovision 2023 hosting: London's Mayor in favor of a bid to host next year's contest

  • The British capital's Mayor has openly expressed his support for London bidding to host the Eurovision Song Contest in 2023. 

    Following the EBU's decision Ukraine not to host next year's contest and after starting talks with UK's BBC, cites across the country as queing up to express their interest in hosting the next Eurovision Song Contest. 

    The capital city of United Kingdom, London, is not missing out the case, as the city's Mayor Sadiq Khan has clearly stated in favor of London's  potential bid to host next year's contest, through a post on his twitter account: 

    Londoners would welcome Eurovision with open arms. We're ready to step up and support Ukraine by hosting a contest that pays tribute to and honours the Ukrainian people, and also celebrates the very best of Britain too.

    London is the capital and largest city of England and the United Kingdom, with a population of just over 9 million. It stands on the River Thames in south-east England. London has hosted the Eurovision Song Contest back in 1960, 1963, 1968 and 1977, whil emore recently they hosted Eurovision Song Contest’s Greatest Hits in 2015.

    Potential Venue: The O2 Arena, commonly known as the O2, is a multi-purpose indoor arena in the centre of the O2 entertainment complex on the Greenwich Peninsula in southeast London. It opened in its present form in 2007. It has the second-highest seating capacity of any indoor venue in the United Kingdom, behind the Manchester Arena, and in 2008 was the world's busiest music arena. In addition two more arena fit the case for Eurovision and could be used as the next venue, OVO Wembley Arena  with a capacity of 12,500 and the Copper Box Arena that can house 7,500 spectators.

     

    Transportation: The lines that formed the London Underground, as well as trams and buses form one of the most exstensive transportation networks in the world. London is a major international air transport hub with the busiest city airspace in the world. Eight airports use the word London in their name, but most traffic passes through six of these: 

    • Heathrow Airport, in Hillingdon, West London. 
    • Gatwick Airport, south of London in West Sussex.
    • Stansted Airport,north-east of London in Essex.
    • Luton Airport, to the north of London in Bedfordshire.
    • London City Airport, the most central airport and the one with the shortest runway, in Newham, East London.
    • Southend Airport, east of London in Essex.

     

    Accommodation: London is one of the leading tourist destinations in the world and in 2015 was ranked as the most visited city in the world with over 65 million visits. From these numbers only it easy to understand the number of hotels and availiable accommodation options the city provides to its million visitors. 

    London is home to many museums, galleries, and other institutions, many of which are free of admission charges and are major tourist attractions. The city offers a wide range of options when it comes to restaurant and nightlife. 

    The final decision for the Eurovision 2023 host city is expected sometime between August and October.
