Ukraine: Junior Eurovision 2021 national selection tweaked due to Covid-19 cases

  • The Ukrainian national broadcaster, UA: PBC, has decided to change the national selection formula due to the uprising Covid-19 cases in Ukraine. 

    Unfortunately the pandemic is still around with all its side affects. UA:PBC has taken the decision to change the way the JESC 2021 national selection will be held due to the uprising number of Covid-19 cases. 

    Namely the national selection will not see a live event taking place as initially planned, with all contestants performing live. This will be replaced by pre-recorded performances which the candidates will tape using the same setting. All of the pre-recorded performances will be broadcast on UA:Kultura on October 23, the date set for the national final. 

    The acts that will compete in the national final are: 

    • Arseniy Grischenko – ‘Redemption’
    • Anastayia Doroshenko (Nana Do) – ‘Svit nadliudei’ (The World of Super People)
    • Daryna Zinchenko – ‘Save this world’
    • Karina Kornuta – ‘Save this world’
    • Darina Kryvenko – ‘Kosy khmarochosy’ (Skyscraping Braids)
    • Anzelina Makfarlein (RREALINA) – ‘Angel of Light’
    • Veronika Morska – ‘Save this world’
    • Yelizabeta Petryk – ‘Save this world’
    • Darya Rebrova – ‘Make Me Happy’
    • Sofia Skvaruk – ‘Golden Time’
    • Mariya Tkachuk – ‘Pazly svitu’ (Puzzles of the World)
    • Olena Usenko (Ellen Usenko) – ‘Vazhil’ (Leverage)

    The outcome of the national final will be determined 50% by public online voting and 50% by jury voting. 

     

    Ukraine in Junior Eurovision 

    Ukraine took part in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest for the first time in 2006. Their best result came in Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2012 when Anastasiya Petryk won for Ukraine with "Nebo". Her sister Viktoria Petryk previously came 2nd at the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2008 with "Matrosy".

    Ukraine has hosted the competition in 2099 and 2013,  with Kiev being the first city to host the contest twice, while Ukraine was then the second country after the Netherlands to host the competition twice. In 2019 Sophia Ivanko represented the country with “The Spirit of Music”, which finished 15th with 59 points.

    Last year Oleksandr Balabanov represented the nation in Warsaw with "Vidkryvai (Open Up)" which finished 7th  with a total of 106 points in the overall score (7th in the jury voting & 6th in the online voting).
