Wednesday, 01 June 2022

  • The Portuguese national broadcaster, RTP,  has confirmed that they will be taking part in the 20th edition of Junior Eurovision next December in Yerevan, Armenia.

RTP has given the green light for Portugal to participate in Junior Eurovision 2022 according to their confirming statement to  Eurofestivales.

After a year of absense in 2020 due to the covid-19 pandemic, Portugal returned last year in the competition in Paris, selecting the winner of The Voice Kids, Simão Oliveira, to represent the country on the stage of La Seine Musicale. So far the broadcaster hasn't cleared out which format they will use to determine their hopeful, whether it will be The Voice of Kids again or one of the internal selection formulas of the past.

Debuting in 2006, Portugal has a total of six participations in the contest in the edition of 2006-2007 and 2017-2019, with the best result being the 14th place of Pedro Madeira and Mariana Venâncio in 2006 and 2017, respectively.

In 2019 in Gliwice, the country was represented by Joana Almeida and "Vem comigo (Come with Me)", finishing in 16th place with 43 points, all from the online vote.In 2020 although RTP initially announced that it will take part in Junior Eurovision in Warsaw, the ongoing covid-19 pandemic and the implemented restrictions forced the broadcaster to quit from the 2020 participation.

Last year the Voice Kids winner, Simão Oliveira, flew the flag in Paris singing “O Rapaz” which finished in the impressive 3rd place in the online voting bringing an 11th overall place for Portugal which marks their best results up to date.
