Portugal: RTP reveals the Festival da Canção 2024 competing composers

The Portuguese national broadcaster, RTP, has released the competing entries of Festival da Canção 2024, the show that will determine the country's Eurovision 2024 representative.
Portugal will be using once again its tradional national selection format of Festival da Canção which will be running for its 58 th edition. A total of 20 composers that will be competing in the next Festival da Cançao, out of which six were selected from the public submissions while the rest 14 were invited directly be RTP.
Namely the 20 competing composers in Festival da Canção 2024 are:

- Iolanda
- João Borsch
- João Couto (via public submission)
- LEFT. (via public submission)
- Leo Middea
- Maria João
- MELA (via public submission)
- Mila Dores
- Nena
- NOBLE
- No Maka
- Perpétua
- Rita Onofre (via public submission)
- Rita Rocha (via public submission)
- Silk Nobre
A total of 809 entries have been submitted in repsonse to RTP's open call for songs, which marks a record for Festival da Canção. The composers may perform their entries themselves or choose another artist to deliver it.
Portugal in Eurovision
Portugal joined the Eurovision family in 1964 when it was represented by António Calvário, who finished last without any points. Since their debut in 1964 Portugal has missed five times the contest, the latest was in 2016 and has competed in total 51 times in the competition. Before 2016, the best result of Portugal in the contest was a 6th placing in 1996 with Lúcia Moniz performing “O meu coração não tem cor” in Oslo.
In 2017 the country got its name on the list with the winning countries, as Salvador Sorbal was crowned winner in Kyiv with his song Amar Pelos Dois . Following Salvador’s win the country hosted the 63rd edition of the contest in Lisbon.
In 2020 Elisa won the national final with "Medo de sentir" but eventually never had the chance to perform on the Eurovision stage as the contest was cancelled due to the covid-19 outbreak. In 2021 the group The Black Mamba won the 55th edition of the Festival da Cançao with the song 'Love is on my Side' which competed in the 2nd Semi final and after qualifying to the Grand final finished 12th with 153 points on the overall scoreboard. In 2022, MARO, won Festival Da Cancao 2022 singing 'Saudade, Saudade' and represented the nation in Turin where she finished 9th in the Grand final.
This year, Mimicat represented Portugal in Liverpool with “Ai coração”. She finished 23rd in the final with 59 points.
