Cyprus: It's Silia Kapsis for Eurovision 2024

  • The Cypriot national broadcaster, CyBC, has confirmed that Silia Kapsis will be flying the flag at Eurovision 2024 in Malmö, Sweden.

    We have our second Eurovision 2024 hopeful selected, as Cyprus has decided to send Silia Kapsis to defend the Cypriot colors in Sweden on the Eurovision 2024 stage. 

    After weeks of ongoing discussions and potential formats for selecting the next Eurovision representative, CyBC selected internally Silia Kapisis to travel to Sweden. 

    Up to now Dimitris Kontopoulos has been confirmed as the person working on Silia's Eurovision 2024 entry. 

     

    A few words for Silia

    Silia is a 16-year-old act born on December 5, 2006, in Sydney, Australia, while he family background has roots both in Cyprus and Greece. Her father hails from Cyprus, while her mother comes from Thessaloniki, Greece. Silia has already made a name for herself in the entertainment industry, excelling as a singer, dancer, actress, and presenter. Her talents have graced television productions in Australia, including a short film titled ‘Pearly Gates’ and the TV series ‘Welcome to Our Lockdown.’ She has also served as a news presenter on Nickelodeon Australia.

    Silia's debut single, “Who Am I?” was released in 2022, which she wrote and composed at the age of 12. Subsequently, she dropped singles “No Boys Allowed” and “Disco Dancer” in March and May 2023 repspectively.

    Cyprus in Eurovision

    Cyprus debuted at the Eurovision Song Contest in 1981 with the group Island, achieving an honorable 6th placing in Dublin. Aphrodite’s island has been represented by some of the biggest names in the Greek and Cypriot music industry: Anna Vissi (1982), Michalis Hatzigiannis (1998), Evridiki (1992,1994,2007), Ivi Adamou (2012), Despina Olympiou (2013), etc.

    The country achieved its best Eurovision result in 2018 when it placed 2nd with Eleni Foureira’s Fuego.  In 2021, Elena Tsagrinou was internally selected to fly the flag in Rotterdam with her song "El Diablo" which competed in the first semi final and after qualifying to the Grand final finished 16th with a total of 94 points, while in 2022 in Turin  Andromache represented the country with her song 'Ela' in Turin competing in the second semi-final where she finished 12th with 63 points ( 9th in thr televoting last in the jury voting) and didn't reach the Grand final. 

    This year Andrew Lambrou represented Cyprus at the 2023 Eurovision Song Contest in Liverpool with his entry ‘Break A Broken A Heart’  finishing 12th with a score of 124 points.
