Portugal: Mimicat singing “Ai Coração” selected for Eurovision 2023

  • Mimicat won the Portuguese national final of Festival da Canção 2023 and will be representing Portugal At Eurovision 2023 in Liverpool singing “Ai Coração”.

    Portugal used once again this year its tradional national selection format of Festival da Canção which will be running for its 57th edition.

    A total of 20 composers were behind the competing entries of Festival da Canção 2023. From those  five were selected from the public submissions while the rest 15 were invited directly be RTP. Initially the invitation was sent to 16 composers with one of them withdrawing eventually due to personal reasons and his spot was filled in by one extra public submission.

    After two semi-final heats the Grand final took place last evening to determine which act will be reprsenting Portugal at Eurovision 2023 in Liverpool. The show was hosted Filomena Cautela and Vasco Palmeirim and Inês Lopes Gonçalves live from Lisbon. 

    A total of 13 acts competed for the right to fly the flag at Eurovision 2023:

    The result

    The winner and next Portuguese Eurovision hopeful was determined 50% by public voting and 50% by the votes of seven regional juries.

    The voting by the seven regional juries ended in a tie between two in the first place as Mimicat and Edmundo received both a total of 66 points (12 points in the ESC voting scale).

    One the televoting results were added in Mimicat topped the overall scroebaord leaving second behind Edmundo while Cláudia Pascoal came third. Here is the final overall score:

    Thus Mimicat will be representing Portugal at Eurovision 2023 in Liverpool singing “Ai Coração” in the first half of the 1st Semi-Final on May 9, 2023. 

     

    A few words for Mimicat

    Marisa Isabel Lopes Mena (born October 25, 1985 in Coimbra, Portugal), better known as Mimicat, is a Portuguese pop and soul singer-songwriter.

    Her recorded falbum at the age of 9. Singer-songwriter self-taught of this very young, spent her younger years between school and recording studios.She participated, at the age of 15 and under the stage name of Izamena, in the 3rd semifinal of the RTP Song Festival 2001 with the song "Mundo Colorido", but did not make it to the final.

    She was the lead singer and author of most of the lyrics of "The Casino Royal", a band by Pedro Janela, composer and producer from Coimbra, and in 2009 graduated in Sound and Image from the Escola Superior de Artes e Design das Caldas da Rainha.

    In 2014 he presented his debut album, "For you", edited by Sony Music Portugal, extracting as the first single "Tell me Why", a song that was included in the soundtrack of the soap opera "Jardins Proibidos". It was produced by Sérgio Costa (Ex-Bell Chase Hotel) and Luis Caldeira.

    Author and composer of all her themes, she has introduced herself to the audience us a mature, warm and strong voice, characteristic of Soul/Pop, of Anglo-Saxon tradition, having been compared to Shirley Bassey and Adele.

    In 2015, he went through some of the biggest Portuguese stages (Festa do Avante, Sol da Caparica, Edp Cool Jazz, Meo Marés Vivas, Culturgest, among others) and debuted on the stages of Brazil, in one of the biggest events in São Paulo, "Virada Cultural" having been acclaimed by the Brazilian critic and affectionately named "Amy Winehouse do Tejo" by Jotabê Metabê Medeiros.

    In 2016 he released two singles "Stay Strong" and "Gave Me Love" on a Pop record, which will be included on the second studio album, coming out in 2017.
