Finland will be selecting their hopeful for Liverpool via their traditional format of UMK and have shed light on the next national selection process will unfold. Today YLE revealed that Samu Haber will be guiding us through the live show of the national final for Eurovision 2023.

    A few words for Samu

Pop and rock superstar Samu Haber is internationally known by his career in the band Sunrise Avenue. Now he's assigned with a completely new role as the host the UMK23 final in Logomo, Turku, on February 25. Haber is known not only for Sunrise Avenue, but also for many of the side jumps in his music career, for example, as a judge in the Voice of Germany competition. Now it's time for him to wear the host's suit for the UMK2023 night.

After a successful 20-year career onSunrise Avenue, Haber has recently embarked on a Finnish-language solo career. Haber's own debut album, Let's Save the World, was released in September 2022 and was a great success. The album, which has crossed the gold record threshold of 10 million streams, is especially known for its hit singles City of Angels, Here We Come and Sä.

Samu says about his new mission:

I’m working for UMK and I’m part of the machinery that serves the artists. They’re very nervous, so a big part of the job is getting everything we can out of the performers together with the directors, lighting techs, costumers, and other staff.

This UMK gig is the cherry on top to an unbelievably good year, which has included the Sunrise Avenue farewell tour, my new album in Finnish, and the sold-out tour that followed it.

There can never be too many carnivals in the world, which is why I have always enjoyed Eurovision and the national finals. Finland has entered some really wonderful songs to Eurovision and there’s a genuine dedication to putting on the best possible show. Especially over the past few years, UMK has grown into something that’s truly spectacular. There’s a sense of pride and real showmanship. We’re so over the Eurovision traumas of the past.

    Finland in Eurovision

Finland has participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 53 times since its debut in 1961. Finland won the contest for the first time in 2006 with Lordi's "Hard Rock Hallelujah". The country's best result before then was achieved by Marion Rung with the song "Tom Tom Tom" in 1973, which placed sixth.

Finland has finished last in the contest eleven times, receiving "nul points" in 1963, 1965 and 1982. Since the introduction of the semi-finals in 2004, Finland has failed to reach the final eight times. In 2014, the country had its best result in eight years when Softengine finished 11th. In 2015, Finland finished last in the first semi-final with the shortest-ever Eurovision entry, "Aina mun pitää" performed by Pertti Kurikan Nimipäivät.

In 2020 Aksel won the national final with the song “Looking Back”.  As the competition was cancelled due to the covid-19 pandemic he never reached the Eurovision stage in Rotterdam. Last year the rock band Blind Channel triumphed in UMK 2021 with their song 'Dark Side' and went off defending the Finnish colors in Rotterdam, where they achieved the country's second best result finishing 6th with 301 points in the overall score.

This year The Rasmus won the UMK national final and went on represeting the nation with their song "Jezebel" which after advancing to the final finished 21st with 38 points in the overall score.
