Eurovision 2023 hosting: Sheffield in the running to host the next competition

  • The list of cities bidding to host the next Eurovision Song Contest is getting longer as Sheffield officially confirms joining the race. 

    Sheffiled is joining the cities that are vying to host the 67th edition of the Eurovision Song Contest. The Sheffields City Council leave no doubt about it as they have released an official statemnent confirming their intentions.

    The statement released mentions the following: 

    Sheffield stands in solidarity with Ukraine and the Ukrainian people, including those we have long been linked with in our twinned city Donetsk.

    Sheffield has a proven reputation for hosting major international events – recently including UEFA Women’s EURO 2022, as well as hosting the World Snooker Championship for over 45 years. Later this year, Sheffield will host the Rugby League World Cup, as well as the prestigious figure skating grand prix, the MK John Wilson Trophy.

    Sheffield’s main arena, the Utilita Sheffield Arena, is a 13,600 capacity venue, that delivers more than 100 events every year. We also have a thriving and diverse hospitality industry, with world-class hotels across our green city.

     

    EBU's requirements for hosting Eurovision 

    In order for a city to host the Eurovision Song Contest in 2022 it must meet a specific number of  requirements. Namely the host city must have: 

    • An international airport no more than 90 minutes from the city.

    • Over 2,000 hotel rooms in the area close to the event.

    • An infrastructure (stadium/venue/centre) capable of hosting a large-scale live broadcast with the minimum requirements listed below.

    In addtion the infrastructure should:

    • Be indoors with air-conditioning and have a well defined perimeter;

    • Have an audience capacity in the main hall of around 8,000 – 10,000 during the event (which corresponds to 70% of maximum capacity of that venue for regular concerts, taking into consideration the specific stage and production needs of the Eurovision Song Contest);

    • Have a main hall with the capacity to house the set and all other requirements needed to produce a high level broadcast production (this includes good specifications of load capacity in the roof, clearance to low beams, easy load in access, etc);

    • Have ample space within easy access of the main hall to support additional production needs, such as: a press centre, delegation spaces, dressing rooms, artist facilities, staff facilities, hospitality, audience facilities, etc;

    • Be available exclusively for 6 weeks before the event, 2 weeks during the show (which will take place in May) and a week after the end of the event for dismantling.

    Sheffield is a city in South Yorkshire, England, serving as the administrative centre of the City of Sheffield. The name derives from the River Sheaf which runs through the city. Sheffield had a population of 518,090 in the 2011 census, making it the second largest city in the Yorkshire and the Humber region.

    Potential Venue: Sheffield Arena, known for sponsorship purposes as Utilita Arena Sheffield, is a multi-purpose arena located in Sheffield, England. It is situated near Meadowhall and lies between Sheffield city centre and Rotherham town centre.Opened in 1991, it is used for concerts and sporting events, and is also home to the Sheffield Steelers ice hockey club. Attendance for all events at the venue has totalled around 14 million since its opening. It has a maximum capacity of 13,600.

    Transportation: The closest international airport to Sheffield is Doncaster Sheffield Airport which is located 18 miles (29 km) from the city centre. It opened on 28 April 2005 on the former RAF Finningley site and is served mainly by charter and budget airlines, with about one million passengers a year. East Midlands Airport is within an hour's drive of the city, Manchester Airport has a direct service hourly by South TransPennine. Leeds Bradford and Humberside are also nearby airports.

    Accommodation: The city provides numrous hotels rooms and means of accommodation as tourism plays a major role in the city's economy on account of numerous attractions - namely the Peak District, sports events and several music festivals. 

    Sheffield is a city with numorous attractions for a visitor to check out, many shoppping centers and restuarant while its nightlife offers a wide range of options.
