ESC 2023 national selection season: A year of early disqualifications

ESC 2023 national selection season: A year of early disqualifications
Tuesday, 24 January 2023

  • It seems it's a national selection season where several candidates have failed to meet the national selection rules and requirements leading to their disqualificaiton.

Most of the broadcasters have launched already their national selection process which unfold in accordance with rules and regulations they implement for each national selection format.

However it seems to be one of those years where several acts, more than usual, or didn't pay attention to the rules or simply failed to comply with the regulation in order to take part in the selection process and chase their dream to reach the Eurovision stage.

The breach of rules has forces broadcaster to disqualify several acts from their national selections. That's go and see in which selection we had this kind of development.

    MESC 2023 (Malta)

One of Malta's most popular singers, Aidan participated in this year's festival with "Regina", a song written in Maltese, English and Spanish. The Maltesian broadcaster TVM announced that Aidan has been disqualified due to violation of the rules 5.3 and 5.6  after unauthorized social media posts were made public.

According to the rules: "The engagement of marketing personnel, marketing officials, marketing companies or the engagement into some sort of marketing or promotional campaign or activity by the artists to promote themselves, the song, their participation, or in some way to influence the public vote is strictly prohibited. The publication of any social media post, promotion material, interviews or media presence/exposure from the announcement of the quarter finalist’s onwards is also strictly prohibited. Any breach of this clause will lead to automatic disqualification".

That was the second time for Aidan to participate in MESC, last year he won the second place with the song "Ritmu".

    Etapa Naţională 2023 (Moldova)

TRM, the Moldovan broadcaster made an announcement about two participants have been disqualified. NÖRDIKA's "Squeeze Paradise" was found to have been published online on February 8, 2012, more than a decade earlier than the deadline allowed by the judging rules, and was therefore disqualified.

Massimo Sinceri and DA-MUSE have been disqualified after the duet were found in breach of the rules regarding citizenship of participants. Etapa Naţională rules state that at least 50% of the singers in a group must hold Moldovan citizenship.

The disqualifications mean that thirty-one songs will now compete in the live auditions of Etapa Naţională on January 28.

Dansk Melodi Grand Prix 2023 (Denmark)

Reiley was reportedly threatened with disqualification after performing his DMGP song "Breaking My Heart" at a music festival in Seoul last fall.

The Danish public broadcaster immediately investigated the matter and concluded that it was not possible to remove Reiley from the DMGP. The song took on a different lyrics and title after September 1, which the EBU set as a deadline for publishing a possible entry.

Reiley will therefore take part in Denmark's national finals as usual and claim to represent the country at Eurovision 2023. In fact, he is already among the top 3 favorites to win the title, even if the odds between him and the rest of the participants are very small.
