Belgium: Eurosong 2023 Jury members unveiled

  • Belgium's broadcaster, VRT, has unveiled the 15 members that will form the national final jury which will determine 50% of the final outcome of 'Eurosong 2023'.

    VRT which is responsible for the selection of next year's Eurovision 2023 representative has bringing back the 'Eurosong' national final format in order to determine the country's hopeful for Liverpool.

    50% of the result will be influenced by the public while the rest 50% will be determined by a 15-member jury, the members of which were revealed by VRT. Four names familiar to the Eurovision audience will feature the show along with 11 more music professionals. 

    Namely, the four jurors that will feature the show commenting also on the live performances are: 

    • Alexander Rybak – Eurovision 2009 winner
    • Laura Tesoro – Belgium's Eurovision 2016 representative
    • Nikkie de Jager – Eurovision 2021 Host
    • Jérémie Makiese – Belgium's act at Eurovision 2022

    The rest 11 jurors will watch the show from backstage contributing with their votes to the jury results. The remaining jurors are: 

    • Laura Govaerts (MNM)
    • Ann Reymen (Radio2)
    • Korneel De Clercq (Radio 1)
    • Thibault Christiaensen (StuBru)
    • Francicso Schuster#LikeMe )
    • Leslie Cable (Head of Delegation for RTBF at the Eurovision Song Contest)
    • Jasper Van Biesen (Author of “65 years of Belgium at the Eurovision Song Contest”)
    • Stephan Monsieur (Chair of OGAE Belgium)
    • André Vermeulen (Journalist and Eurovision specialist)
    • Els Germonpré (Music coordinator Eén)
    • Manu Lammens (music manager MNM)

     

    Eurosong 2023

    A total of 7 acts will take the stage in Belgium's national final for Eurovision 2023 with each one of them performing two songs. The competing acts and songtitles previosuly revealed are:

    • Ameerah – “The Carnival” / “Armageddon”
    • Chérine – “Ca m’ennuie pas” (It doesn’t bother me) / “Mon étoile” (My star)
    • gala dragot – “emotion ollie” / “t‘inquiète” (don’t worry)
    • Gustaph – “Because of You” / “The Nail”
    • Hunter Falls – “Home” / “Ooh La La”
    • Loredana – “I Dream in Colours” / “You Lift Me Up”
    • The Starlings – “Oceanside” / “Rollercoaster”

    The national final is set to take place in Paleis 12 / Palais 12 in Brussels on January 14, 2023. The outcome of the competition will be determined by a combination of jury voting and televoting. The tickets for the event will be released for sale soon. 

     

    Belgium in Eurovision 

    Belgium is one of the countries to have participated in the Eurovision SOng Contest since its first edition back in 1956. After 30 years the country achieves to win the contest in 1986 with the 13 yo Sandra Kim and her entry “J’aime la vie“.

    The country has finished last in the contest 8 times while in two of these occasions didn’t receive any point at all. In 2003 with the group Urban Trad and their song “Sanomi” it almost reached its second victory finishing in the 2nd place, only two points behind Turkey and Sertab Erener with her entry “Every way that I can“.

    Although the country has managed to qualify to the final 5 times the last decade, with Loïc Nottet in 2015 and Blanche in 2017 achieving the best results coming 4th in the final, the last two years it hasn’t been that story.  In 2018 with  Sennek and “A matter of time” , failed to reach the final although the juries ranked her 9th in her semi final. In 2019 internally selected  Eliot represented the country in Tel Aviv with his song “Wake up” which failed to reach the grand final.

    In 2020 Hooverphonic were internally selected to perform "Release Me" in Rotterdam. Following the cancellation of the contest by EBU due to the coronavirus pandemic, Hooverphonic represented the country in 2021 in Rotterdam with their song 'The Wrong Place" and after qualifying from the 1st semi final show they finished 19th in the final with an overall total of 74 points. 

    This year, The Voice Belgium winner, Jeremie Makiese flew the flag in Turin, Italy singing 'Miss you' which came 19th in the final with a total of 64 points.
