Germany: Malik Harris to Eurovision 2022 with the song 'Rockstars'

  • Malik Harris won the German national final with his song 'Rockstars' and will be representing the country at Eurovision 2022 in Turin. 

    Germany  determined this year its Eurovision 2022 act and entry via the national final "Germany 12 points' which took place this evening in Berlin. Barbara Schöneberger hosted the event, while the following acts featured the show as guest stars: Conchita Wurst (Austrian Eurovision 2014 winner), Jane Comerford (leading vocalist of Texas Lightning, Germany 2006), Thomas Hermanns (German spokesperson 2005-2008), Bülent Ceylan (comedian), Jamala (Ukrainian Eurovision 2016 winner)

    A total of 944 applications were received for this year's national selection. An ESC expert jury with seven members shorlisted six acts which competed this evening for the right to represent Germany at Eurovision 2022 in Turin.

    One of the highlights of the show was Jamala's appearance! The Ukrainian act who has fleed from her country which has been invaded by Russia talked about the situation in her country and gave a captivating emotional perofrmance of '1944' song which had won Eurovision 2016. 

     

    The results 

    The outcome of the national final was determined exclusively by public voting. 50% of the public vote came from the radio voting while the rest 50% by televoting during the show. The voting on radio had already opened since Monday and concluded 1 minute before the live show. The results from the radio voting were revealed by the following radio spokespersons:

    A few words for Malik

    Malik Harris comes from near Landsberg am LechThe German-American has already landed hits in the airplay charts and has released his first album "Anonymous Colonist". Malik has also already completed his first tour and has also supported the likes of James Blunt, Alex Clare, Jeremy Loops, Tom Odell and LP. He was the first German artist to be seen on a Times Square billboard in New York City for a week when his single "When We've Arrived" was released in October 2020. And Malik has a well-known father: ex-talk show host Ricky Harris.

    According to Malik, his Eurovision entry is the most personal song he has published to date. He says about his song: 

    Rockstars' is a 'song that means so much to me personally and is intended to offer a glimmer of hope, especially at this difficult time, while also showing that we're all in the same boat.' I can't wait to play the song live and to share it with many people."
