Greece: Marina Satti confirmed for Eurovision 2024

  • The Greek national broadcaster, ΕΡΤ, has confirmed Marina Satti as the nation's Eurovision 2024 hopeful in Malmο. 

    Greece has internally selected Marina Satti to represent the country at the 68th edition of the Eurovision Song Contest in Malmo, Sweden next May. 

    The song Marina will be delivering in Sweden has not been determined with ERT opening the song submission window from October 25 up to December 1, 2023. 

    The press release by ERT mentions the following: 

    The artist who will represent our country in the 68th Eurovision Song Contest 2024 was announced today, Tuesday 24 October, at 15:00, on ΕΡΤ1, on the show “Studio 4”, with Nancy Zampetoglou and Thanasis Anagnostopoulos

    This is Marina Satti, who will travel to Malmo in Sweden for the music com.petition that will be held from 7 to 11 May 2024. The accomplished performer and creator gladly accepted ΕΡΤ’s proposal to represent our country in a symbolic year, as this year marks the 50th anniversary of Greece’s first appearance at Eurovision, in 1974.

    The song that Marína Satti will perform has not yet been selected. Therefore, both ΕΡΤ and her record company, Golden Records and Minos EMI, a Universal Music Company, as well as the performer wish this option to be as open as possible.

    In this context, from tomorrow, October 25 2024 until December 1 2023 composers can send their own songs and proposals for Marina via the following email address: [email protected] . It is reminded that, based on EBU regulations, the songs must be original and unreleased, with a maximum time of 3 minutes.

     

    A few words for Marina

    Marina Satti,  born 26 December 1986,  is a Greek singer, songwriter, and music producer. Her music is mostly characterized by combining traditional Greek, Arab and Balkan sounds with urban elements, rhythm, and production.

    Satti was born in Athens to a Sudanese Arab father and a Greek mother, and raised in Heraklion, Crete. She began classical piano training at an early age and classical vocal training in high school.

    Satti formed part of the EBU's European Jazz Orchestra. She also performed as a singer of the World Jazz Nonet at the John F. Kennedy Center in Washington. Along with Bobby McFerrin, she formed the a cappella vocal group The Singing Tribe. In 2016, Satti founded Fonés ("Voices"), a female a cappella group performing traditional polyphonic songs.

    In 2016, Satti released her single "Koupes" ("Cups"), which reached more than 24 million views on YouTube, and was included in Ravin & Bob Sinclar's Buddha Bar 20 Years Anniversary album. In 2017, her next single, "Mantissa" ("Seeress"), charted in the European Union's Official Top 100 and Bulgaria's Top 40.

    In June 2018, Satti and Fonés presented YALLA!, a repertoire of world music and pop compositions while in May 2022 she relesed her debut album 'YENNA'.

    Greece in Eurovision

    Greece made its first participation in the contest  in 1974 with Marinela. Since then the country has won one time the competition, in 2005 with Helena Paparizou and her entry  My number one. Since 2004 and up to 2013 the country was one of the most successful countires in the contest, having achieved 9 times a top ten placing. In 2016 it experienced its first non qualifying results since the semi final were introduced, with Argo in Stockholm.

    In 2020 Stefania was internally selected to represent Greece in Eurovision 2020 with her song 'Supergi!rl'. Unfortunately the contest was cancelled due to the covid-19 pandemic depriving the young talented act from her journey to Rotterdam. Nevertheless, ERT continued with Stefania for the 2021 edition in Rotterdam where the young act competed in the second semi final with her song  'Last Dance' and after qualifying to the final achieved to finish in 10th place bringing Greece back in the top 10 for the first time since 2013.  

    In 2022 Amanda Tenfjord was internally selected to fly the flag in Turin where performing in the first semi final her song 'Die Together' qualified to the Grand final offering another top-10 placing to Greece by finishing 8th on the final overall score with 225 points.

    This year Victor Vernicos flew the flag in Liverpool with the song 'What they say' which didn't make it to the geand final.
